DEA Dieksand Land Station opens its doors on 26 August to provide entertaining information on the world of Mittelplate crude oil
Visitors can look forward to a programme rich in variety surrounding the extraction and processing of the black gold
30 years’ safe and environmentally compatible crude oil production from Mittelplate, Germany’s largest oil field: to celebrate this event, the Land Station of DEA Deutsche Erdoel AG in Friedrichskoog plans to open its doors to the public on Saturday, 26 August 2017. From 10:00h to 18:00h, visitors can embark on a voyage of discovery into the world of domestic crude oil and can look forward to a rich programme of information and entertainment.
“We want to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of oil production from Mittelplate in style, together with citizens in the region, holidaymakers, people on excursions as well as with employees and their families,” explains Wolfgang Faist, Head of the Holstein Production District. “Everyone is cordially invited to attend this celebration,” says Faist.
The entertainment programme ranges from jump castles and soccer goal targets, a bungee trampoline, all the way through to a 360-degree walkaround on Mittelplate Island. The programme will be rounded off by an exhibition as well as expert guided tours to explain the technical processes of extraction and processing of domestic oil to visitors in a readily understandable fashion. One of the focal points will be a presentation of safety and rescue equipment. In addition, visitors can look forward to being served ice cream, coffee and cake as well as hot snacks.
The Holstein Production District extends to include the Dieksand Land Station as well as Mittelplate, Germany’s only offshore oil drilling and production island. The Production District and its workforce of some 90 employees have been coordinating environmentally compatible oil extraction for over 30 years now.
The incident-free extraction of oil in compliance with strict safety standards bears testimony to the compatibility of environmental protection and oil production even in sensitive natural environments. Since taking up production in the year 1987, DEA as operator and its partner Wintershall (each with a 50 per-cent share) have already produced 34 million tons of oil. Based on today’s criteria, a further 20 million tons of crude are considered technically and commercially recoverable.

The year 1985 saw the beginning of construction of the Mittelplate drilling and production island off the western coast of the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, where Germany’s biggest oil reservoir has been in production since 1987. Since the year 2000, oil has been produced not only offshore, but also onshore, from the Dieksand Land Station near Friedrichskoog. Thanks to its high safety and environmental protection standards, the drilling and production island is regarded as a positive example of responsible oil production. In addition, domestic oil production in Dithmarschen supports 1,000 jobs along the western coast of Schleswig-Holstein.
